Appalachian Trail
Distance: 2,200 miles
One of the most popular hiking trails in the United States, the Appalachian Trail is easily accessible from the Johnson City/Tri-Cities area — as well as a popular starting point for many hikers wishing to tackle a section of the Appalachian Trail. Hikers can choose to hike south towards the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or north towards Virginia and beyond.
With its scenic views of the surrounding mountains and beautiful wildlife, as well as the challenging terrain, hiking even a portion of the trail is a must-do for any serious hiker.
This 2,200-mile-long hiking trail stretches from Georgia to Maine, passing through 14 states. It's a challenging but rewarding experience that takes hikers through a variety of terrains — including forests, mountains and rivers — depending upon the portion you hike.
There are several trailheads and access points in the Johnson City area, including Carvers Gap, which is known for its stunning views of the Roan Highlands. Hikers can also stop by the nearby town of Erwin, which is home to the Appalachian Trail Museum and the Nolichucky Outdoor Learning Institute.
The Appalachian Trail is an important part of American history and culture. It’s been in existence since 1937 and is one of the world’s longest hiking trails.
