For higher learning opportunities, there’s East Tennessee State University (ETSU) — a public university located in Johnson City. The university was founded in 1911 and has since grown into a comprehensive university with a range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs.

ETSU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and has been ranked as a top public university in the southern region of the United States by U.S. News & World Report.

ETSU is known for its strong programs in healthcare, with colleges of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. The university also has strong programs in education, business, arts and sciences, and technology. ETSU has more than 200 student organizations and clubs, as well as NCAA Division I athletic teams. The university's mascot is the Buccaneer, and the school colors are navy blue and gold.
